When it comes to skin care, our hands are often neglected. They go through a rough time (especially at the moment!) as they are the only part of our body which is constantly exposed to the elements.
It’s not surprising, then, that as we grow older, our hands can end up taking the brunt of the maturing process. Pigmentation, loss of elasticity and dryness are among the common complaints in aging hands.
Firstly, protective gloves should always be worn when cleaning and gardening – washing detergents can be very harsh and dry out the skin.
Also, as with your face, UV light and the sun will be a major contributor to premature aging hands – even if you work in an office! A good sunscreen, at least SPF 20 will give great protection to your hands.
What should I be looking for when I purchase a hand cream? You will want something that will nourish, hydrate and heal. Hyaluronic acid is great for hydration and a small amount of lactic acid will gently exfoliant and get rid of dead skin cells. Other effective ingredients to look out for include argan oil, aloe vera, jojoba oil, grape seed oil, vitamin E, shea butter and AHA’s.
And finally, don’t forget your nails! Keeping them covered with a protective layer, such as Shellac or nail polish will keep them strong while massaging in a cuticle oil on a daily bases will ensure that they are hydrated.
